王老先生懷疑老妻聽力不行需要使用助聽器，又不敢叫她去看醫生。
於是，他就自己去請教醫生。
醫生跟他說: 「你先在約20公尺處跟她講話，如果沒回應，就走近到約15公尺處再跟她講話。……一直到她回應了，再來告訴我，要多近她才能聽得到。」
當晚老妻在廚房燒飯，王老先生就在約20公尺處用平常聲音問:
「太太，今天吃什麼好菜啊？」
沒有回應！
走近5公尺再問同樣問題，還是沒回應。
這樣一路走一路問，直到站到老妻背後再問同樣問題。
終於聽到老妻回應了。
「佛跳牆、柬坡肉……都講第5遍了！」
