有一隻老獅子病了，躲在洞穴中大聲呻吟，附近的一些動物聽到獅子的呻吟聲，紛紛進洞探視。
狐狸聽到了這消息，也前往探視，走到洞穴前，只聽到老獅子呻吟聲越來越大，可憐極了。
但這時原本打算進去的狐狸，忽然豎起耳朵，收回已經跨進洞穴的前腳，在四周來回踱步。
洞裡的老獅子眼見狐狸遲遲沒有進洞，忍不住問狐狸說：「狐狸啊！你既然來了，為什麼不進來呢？」
狐狸回答：「我只見一些往裡走的動物腳印，卻看不到往外走出來的腳印，我怎麼敢進去呢！？」
