若別人稱讚叫「口碑」，若自我標榜叫「吹噓」。
從「誇」字來看，上面是個「大」，下面是個「虧」，故可以這樣理解和解釋—-一個自大的人，最終是要吃大虧的。
晚清左宗棠西征，收復了新疆，立下了不世之功。
但左宗棠本來就有「文人喜大言」的毛病，立功後更是見人就談自己的西征經歷。
有人找他辦事，不管是公事、還是私事，左宗棠三言兩語就能把事情繞到西征上面去，讓對方無可奈何。
左宗棠原是有本事的人，但吹噓自誇的功夫也確實不賴，故受人詬病，所以標榜自己的話，我們最好不說。
其實真正有學識有涵養的人，是不用開口標榜自己的，「天不言自高，地不言自厚」。
反而，一個自大、自滿的人，必定沈醉在他的自大、自滿，反而凸顥他的無知、無能。因此，可能永遠無知、無能下去，最終必定會在不斷地自我膨脹和莽撞行事中吃大虧。
