最壞也只不過如此！

當你跌到谷底時，你只能往上，不會往下！
人生永遠充滿希望，去做就對了！
他，蔡耀星，花蓮泰雅族人，因家境貧窮，國小畢業即當學徒。
16歲時，他在工作時因誤觸高壓電，傷勢非常嚴重，好幾家醫院都拒收，醫師也都搖頭說「沒救了」；後來輾轉進入了空軍醫院，才從死神手中搶回一條命，但，他雙手全被截肢，也注定他往後一輩子都是「無臂殘障者」。
由四肢健全，一下子變成「無臂人」，真是晴天霹靂啊！
後來，父親車禍過世，母親改嫁，妹妹也遠嫁，
他一人獨居多年，但「生命還是要活下去啊」！
沒有手，怎麼吃飯？蔡耀星看狗兒如何吃，就學狗兒一樣「直接用嘴吃飯」！
沒有手，怎麼穿衣服？他學會用嘴巴、用腳趾頭，慢慢將衣服套上！
穿褲子呢？他利用樹木分叉出的樹枝，可勾住褲子，以利順勢起身、將褲子套上……。
所以，在他家中，姊姊、姊夫為他釘上好多釘子及其他「暗器」，來協助他完成每一件事情。
俗話說：「雙手萬能」，可是，他卻是「雙腳萬能」，舉凡洗頭、洗臉、刷牙、寫字、拿書、拿電話、梳頭、擦屁股……全都靠「雙腳」來完成！
連洗米、煮飯、切菜、切肉，甚至用腳夾著鏟子炒菜，一「腳」的好功夫，真是已經「神乎其技」了。
而這些「成果」，卻是十年來，他辛酸走來的血與淚啊！
有人問蔡耀星：「現在哪些事情你比較沒辦法自己做？」
他想了想說道：「嗯……剪腳指甲、拔鼻毛吧！還有就是去辦事情，有時很麻煩，譬如，坐車給車票，要用嘴銜著車票；或是買火車票，那個櫃台那麼高，車票和找的錢我都拿不到，售票員的臉又很臭，叫我趕快把車票和錢拿走，可是我跟他說：『我沒有手啊！』」
蔡耀星很健談，也很開朗、幽默，他說：「我沒錢坐車、沒錢吃飯，我沒有手臂，一個人一直走，坐在車子裡的人都一直看著我，看我像個『白癡』一樣；可是，我不管別人的眼光，我要不斷地鍛鍊我的體力和耐力，我要讓我的泳技愈來愈好！」
「我相信『念力』，我要堅定目標！雖然以前我靠『養雞鴨、撿蝸牛』為生，但是我還是天天訓練體力，在水中游、在路上走、在沙灘跑，我不管別人是怎麼看我，但我要『為自己而活』！我希望有一天，能參加『殘障奧運會』，這是我最大的夢想！」蔡耀星看著我，眼光也閃耀著盼望與美夢！
而說這「大話」的他，並不是隨便說說而已，因為，無師自通的他，早已在1996年參加台灣區運會，成為蛙式50、100公尺，仰式50公尺的金牌得主；1998年和2000年又獲得蛙式、仰式等多項金牌，也早就有「無臂蛙王」的封號。
蔡耀星回憶道：「得獎當時，很激動，很多痛苦的思緒都湧上心頭，但也很有成就感！」
蔡耀星微笑地說：「那時，我也想到，我不是『廢人』，也不是『白癡』，我是一個『有用的人』！當我一個人沒錢坐車，孤零零地走兩、三個小時到神秘谷或七星潭游泳時，人家以為我是『白癡』，但是，我相信，『我流多少汗、走多少路，老天爺都在算，祂絕不會辜負我的！』」
如今，在花蓮縣教育局陳素嬰老師的協助下，蔡耀星進入花崗國中就讀補校；他風雨無阻地上學，用腳打電腦、用腳捧書、用腳寫考卷，也用腳挺住自己多舛的人生。
而在多場的學校演講中，蔡耀星告訴年輕學子們：「人生充滿希望，去做就對了！」「每天愁眉苦臉也是一天，還不如快快樂樂地過每一天！」
今年，在全國「炬光獎」頒獎典禮上，蔡耀星更光榮地受邀上台！
27歲的他，沒有雙手，卻勇敢地從絕境中走出自我、挑戰逆境人生，成為「炬光十大傑出青年」；而花蓮縣長王慶豐與婦聯會也都應允，將長期資助他免費就學！
雖然，蔡耀星現在只是唸國一夜校，但他卻將生命中一副極差的牌，打得令人刮目相看！這樣，「用腳改寫人生、游出生命金牌」的無臂蛙王，豈不教人又敬又佩？
「不要看我失去什麼，只看我還擁有什麼？」
的確，有時我們可能會失去手腳、眼睛、父母、愛人……但是，我們不能一直想著「我失去什麼」，因為有些事，失而無法獲得；我們必須轉念，想想「我還擁有什麼」，而加以珍惜！知道嗎，「樂觀的人，從挫折中看到成功的契機；悲觀的人，從挫折中看到失敗的來臨！」
「最壞，也只不過如此，天無絕人之路！」
就像蔡耀星，雙手失去，但換個念頭：「最壞，也不會比現在更壞！」
畢竟，「生活中的每個問題、挫折，都豐富著我們的人生啊！」只要我「發憤圖強、愈挫愈勇」，一樣可以走出昔日的陰霾，而看見令人雀躍的彩虹啊！
若你現在正遭遇人生低潮，看看別人所經歷的人生，再看看自己所經歷的事，似乎也沒那麼糟糕了，甚至還有點幸福吧。
手掌上粗糙的繭，絕不是一夜生成，而是歷經各種磨難、經年累月才形成；堅勒的生命，也是歷經血淚，才一點一點變的堅勒，面對困境，抱怨只會讓自己往死胡同裡走，只有勇於面對才能走出人生的新篇章來。
就像蔡耀星，他不向命運低頭的精神著實讓人敬佩。
