從前，有個年輕的國王，為了能找出一個賢內助，決定通過考試來選取皇后。
考試當天，許多大臣、財主的千金都來應考，這時有一位農家的姑娘也來應試。
國王的第一個問題是：「日出的地方和日落的地方相距有多遠？」
一開始的問題就把各家千金給難倒了，有誰能量出這個尺寸！
只見農家姑娘平靜的答 道：「剛好是一天的距離。」
國王連番稱讚：「答的好，答的好！」千金小姐們的臉都紅了。
國王的第二個問題是：「天和地之間的距離有多遠？」
大臣的女兒搶著回答：「有道是九萬里長天，我想天地之間相距九萬里。」
財主的女兒接著說：「唐僧取經走了十萬八千里，我想這就是天地之間的距離。」國王搖搖頭。
農家姑仍平靜的回答：「天地之間的距離剛好是眼睛一睜一閉之間的距離。」
國王一拍大腿：「對啊！」其他千金心裡更是焦急。
國王的第三個問題是：「真話和假話之間的距離有多遠？」
大家都楞住了，真話和假話之間還有距離單位嗎？
此時農家姑仍毫不猶豫的回答：「就是兩耳之間的距離。用一個耳朵聽一面之詞往往聽到假話，用兩個耳朵聽取不同的意見才能聽到真話。」
國王高興得連連稱好，準備宣布要娶這位農家姑娘作皇后。
但是，皇太后看不起這位農家姑娘，刁難的提出了三個問題
找一朵天下最美的花，一隻天下最珍貴的鳥和一個有骨頭的雞蛋來，
否則便取消婚約。
農家姑娘不慌不忙得答應了。
三天後，農家姑娘帶著一朵棉花，一隻燕子和一顆開始孵化的雞蛋來到皇宮。
國王及皇太后、大臣、財主、千金小姐們都還觀看農家姑娘如何完成這三件事。
農家姑娘依次解說一番，國王當眾宣布：
「誰都不准在雞蛋裡挑骨頭了！這位姑娘是我最理想的皇后。」

答案：農家姑娘說道：「人說牡丹是花中之王，但牡丹雖美，卻不及棉花能紡織成布，染色成樣，多彩多姿，所以棉花最美。人說鳳凰是鳥中之王，但鳳凰雖珍，卻不及燕子能捕捉蟲害，保衛農物，滋養萬民，所以燕子最是珍貴。而雞蛋裡的小雞已長出骨架，在未孵化之前就是有骨頭的雞蛋。」
外貌是一時的、不長久，且久了會變成庸俗，智慧才是永恆的美麗。
