「媽媽，我要去睡冰床了」…….
十三歲眉清目秀的瑋澤躺在林口長庚兒童醫院病床上，吐出這句話之後沒多久就過世了，臨走前，面容安詳。
瑋澤九歲那一年，突然發現自己手腳愈來愈沒有力氣，身體莫名疼痛，在台北各大教學醫院求診、轉診，始終找不出病因。整整花了一年，最後才被長庚醫院腫瘤科洪悠紀醫師診斷為「原發性神經外胚層腫瘤」從此，瑋澤開始過著與惡性腫瘤為伍的生活。
身體情況好，媽媽就陪他回學校上課，情況轉糟時，只好回醫院住院接受治療，「再怎麼痛，他都不哭不鬧，」
瑋澤媽媽語氣既心疼、又安慰…..。
一年年過去，瑋澤待醫院的時間愈來愈長，年紀雖小，卻知道自己生了什麼病，而且堅持親自簽「放棄急救」醫囑聲明「因為他不想像隔壁大哥哥過世前，全身插滿管子，痛苦掙扎，最後七孔流血走了，」幾乎全天候守在病床旁的瑋澤媽媽說。
瑋澤似乎知道自己來日不多，他跟媽媽說，很想念同學。
媽媽提議幫他辦個小型同學會，邀請幾個要好的同學來看他，麥當勞快樂兒童餐（瑋澤看著同學享用），在病床旁掛上氣球、彩帶，瑋澤靜靜地看著同學七嘴八舌說班上發生了什麼有趣的事，蒼白的病房變得熱鬧活潑。
媽媽當然也跟同學說明瑋澤是生了什麼病，解釋瑋澤必須頂著大光頭，那麼久不能上學的原因，以去除孩子們內心的恐懼。
從來，瑋澤媽媽都不隱瞞瑋澤病情，「我總是跟他說，隨緣，你想做什麼就做什麼，以後不管發生什麼，我們都是愛你的。」
同學會完那天晚上，瑋澤賴在媽媽身旁說：「媽媽，謝謝妳，我今天好開心。」
瑋澤過世前一個月，長期照顧瑋澤的醫療團隊成員之一，方恩真護理師在一次閒聊時，問瑋澤有什麼願望想實現？「我想幫洪醫師過生日，」當時腫瘤已經侵犯到心臟附近的瑋澤不假思索道出。
對瑋澤一家人來說，長期悉心照顧瑋澤的洪悠紀醫師無疑是救命恩人。
某個星期五下午，幾乎動員醫療團隊每個人，有人負責訂花，有人買蛋糕、水果，還得有人負責支開洪醫師，想辦法找理由讓她查完病床，最後來到瑋澤病房，來個大驚喜。
當瑋澤出其不意捧出蛋糕，對洪醫師說「生日快樂」，那一瞬間，又驚又喜的洪醫師感動落淚，圍繞在瑋澤床邊的醫護人員們，也忍不住眼角泛紅。
慶生會結束後，瑋澤趁著體力還好時，自己打電話問候住在外地的阿嬤。他將訪客送來的水果分送給護士阿姨，謝謝她們多年照顧。
最後一個星期，瑋澤幾乎沒吃東西，只喝水，不做積極治療。
原本就很安靜不多話的瑋澤有一天突然說：
「媽媽，我要放下，一切隨緣。」
那時媽媽並不清楚瑋澤想表達什麼，直到三天後才恍悟。
那天是個風和日麗的春天早晨，瑋澤躺在媽媽懷裡，輕聲說著：
「媽媽，我要去睡冰床了……」然後闔眼離去。
「兒子教會我，不要太在意很多事，」瑋澤媽媽淡淡笑著說，瑋澤這幾年生病，讓以前只知道賺錢、很少與孩子互動的老公開始幫忙接送兒子女兒上學、詢問功課，全家人關係變得更緊密。
到了民間習俗「頭七」的日子，瑋澤阿嬤很傷心地問瑋澤姐姐，為什麼沒有哭？
「阿嬤不要哭，他在天上過得很好，」瑋澤姐姐回應。
瑋澤姐姐一開始很生氣老天爺為什麼讓弟弟發生這樣的事，很恨、不甘心。
可是在入殮那天，當瑋澤被放入棺木的那一剎那，她赫然發現，弟弟對著她，柔軟的臉上竟現出一抹笑容！
「瑋澤姐姐後來跟我說，弟弟像個大洋娃娃，只是睡著了，他應
該不會再疼痛受苦了」瑋澤媽媽眼神望向遠方。
她固定到學校擔任志工媽媽，輔導需要被關懷的學生，雖然剛失去一個兒子，依然神情愉快，充滿活力。
因為「生命生生不息，死掉的只是軀殼，靈魂永遠存在，瑋澤將繼續他該有的旅程」……媽媽語氣堅定。
