話說清朝乾隆帝，某次問紀曉嵐：「你是忠臣嗎？」
紀曉嵐回答：「是」。
乾隆帝故意說：「三丈外是金水河，去，跳河盡忠吧！」
紀曉嵐立刻回答：
「我死不得。我在河邊夢到屈原大夫，他開導我說：『我當年投江，乃因楚王昏庸，而當今乾隆乃明君聖主，為人臣者，理當盡力效勞，豈可一死？棄君王不顧，何忠之有？』我醒來後，覺得很有道理，願終生效忠吾皇，死而後已。」
乾隆帝聽了，莫可奈何，哭笑不得。
