在肯亞內羅畢的街道上，住著一位被父母拋棄，無家可歸的小男孩約翰。
為了生存，約翰不得不用乞討的方式來過生活—-
有時候，他會在紅綠燈旁等待，當變成紅燈時，他馬上衝到馬路上，敲每台車的車窗，當車窗搖下時，他再禮貌的問，不可以給他一些零錢，讓他買食物吃。
就這樣日復一日，直到有一天，約翰遇到了一位非常不尋常的女士。
他們沒想到，這一次的相遇，將徹底改變了他們的生活。
這位女士的名字是葛拉迪詩。
那一天，當葛拉迪詩搖下車窗時，約翰看到車裡的狀況時，嚇了一跳。
他看到車裡有許多大型機器，而這些大型機器都連接到葛拉迪詩的身上。
好奇的約翰問葛拉迪詩那些機器是作什麼用的，為什麼它們要接在她身上。
不知為何，葛拉迪詩覺得約翰很投她的緣，所以她把車停在旁邊並跟約翰解釋說，她有氣胸的毛病，所以她需要隨時隨地都攜帶氧氣罐和發電機，她帶著它們已經超過七年了。
約翰從小到大從沒見過這樣的事情，他被震驚了。
但此更加的引起約翰的好奇心，所以他繼續問葛拉迪詩，為什麼她會有氣胸，是天生的還是後天的？
葛拉迪詩說：「是後天的，她現在只有32歲，確已經歷了12次的手術，其中一個手術還破壞了她的視神經，導致她視力不佳呈現半失明狀態，她現在只能在白天開車，她知道印度有間醫院專門治療此疾病，但所費不少，她沒有那樣多的錢。」
約翰聽完後心理覺得很難過，他開始哭泣。
約翰覺得雖然他的生活很艱難，但跟葛拉迪詩比，他的艱難生活根本不算什麼，他想要幫葛拉迪詩。
所以約翰邊哭邊問葛拉迪詩，他可以幫助她什麼？
葛拉迪詩聽完，拉著約翰的手對約翰說：「我們可以一起禱告。」
但他們禱告完後，約翰仍然不滿意。
他還是想再多為她做一些事，所以約翰把那一天他所要到錢都拿出來給葛拉迪詩。
他肯定葛拉迪詩一定比他更需要錢。
一個住在街頭沒有家以乞討過活的男孩，並沒有因此變得憤世嫉俗，已經是非常難得的了，但不只如此，他還充滿了同情和善意，用他僅有的去幫助別人。
當下，他們都沒想到，接下來發生了一件令人驚訝的事情。
就在他們說話的同時，一位路人在旁從頭聽到尾，並拍下一張照片。
他將葛拉迪詩與約翰這個故事和照片上傳到網路，過沒多久，成千上萬的人被葛拉迪詩的故事和約翰的善良所感動，不只如此，這位路人還發起了一個募款活動，希望可以藉此幫助葛拉迪詩和約翰，在短短的四天內，這活動募集到了8萬美元。
但是，當這位路人要將這所得到的募款分成兩半給葛拉迪詩和約翰時，約翰一毛錢都不要，他希望這筆錢全都給葛拉迪詩，讓她可以去印度得到該有的治療。
另一方面，葛拉迪詩為了感謝這位善良並改變她生活的小男孩，她決定照顧約翰。
她把約翰帶回家一起住，現在約翰不再住街頭了，他也可以去上學，他永遠不用再乞討，過著有一餐、沒一餐的生活。
他現在有一個愛他的「母親」，現在的他和葛拉迪詩就像是一對真正的母子，互相關心和照顧。
俗話說的好「施比受更有福」。
我想這應該意味著：不求回報的付出可以讓你收穫更多。
所以，生活再艱難，也不要怨天尤人，而唯有保持良善的心與堅強的意志，自助才能天助。
葛拉迪詩與約翰能夠吸引貴人的幫助，不是因為他們的遭遇有多悲苦，而是他們那良善的心，以及和命運對抗的精神，此引起世人的共鳴並伸出援手。
