有一天，美國第16任總統林肯來到華盛頓的大街上，身後跟隨著幾個著便裝的衛兵。
忽然，他看到在一家名為《智慧》的雜誌社門前圍了一大群人，不知道在幹什麼。他耐不住好奇，馬上湊了過去。
結果發現，在華麗的牆壁上竟鑽了一個小洞，洞旁寫著幾個醒目的大字：不許向裡看！
但好奇心還是驅使人們爭先恐後地向裡觀望。
林肯也順著小洞向裡看，原來裡面是用五彩繽紛的霓虹燈組成的《智慧》雜誌的廣告。
林肯大笑起來。
他覺得這家雜誌的廣告很有創意，於是就吩咐秘書為自己訂了一份。
《智慧》雜誌果然很獨特，不論內容、版式、裝幀、封面設計，還是印刷質量都稱得上一流。
於是，林肯便總是抽出時間來閱讀。
有一天，林肯處理完當天的公務，又拿起一份新到的《智慧》雜誌翻閱起來。
翻著翻著，他突然發現，在這份雜誌中間有幾頁沒有被裁開。
林肯頓時很掃興，順手就將雜誌放到了一邊。
當天晚上，林肯躺在床上時，突然不經意地想起這本雜誌的事情，這本雜誌既然是一本風靡各地的雜誌，在管理方面應該是十分嚴格的，怎麼會出現這種連頁現象呢？
他由此聯想到雜誌社曾在牆壁上鑽小洞做廣告的事，難道這回又有什麼新花樣？
他翻身下床，找到這本雜誌小心翼翼地用小刀裁開了書的連頁。
裁開之後，發現連頁中的一節內容被紙糊住了。
林肯想，被糊住的地方大概是印錯了。
但印錯的內容又是什麼呢？
好奇心驅使林肯又用小刀一點點地撬起了糊著的紙。
最後，他發現下面竟寫著這樣幾行字：恭喜您！您用您的好奇心和接受新事物的能力，獲得了本刊1萬美元的獎金，請將雜誌退還本刊，我們將負責調換並給您寄去獎金。—–《智慧》編輯部
林肯對編輯部這種啟發讀者智慧和好奇心的做法極其欣賞，便提筆寫了一封信，附上了自己的一些建議。
不久，林肯便接到了新調換的雜誌和編輯部的一封回信：總統先生，在我們這次故意印錯的300本雜誌中，只有8個人從中獲得了獎金，絕大多數人則只是採取了將雜誌寄回雜誌社重新調換的做法，看來您的確是真正的智者。
根據您來信的建議，我們決定將雜誌改名。
這本改名後的雜誌，就是至今風靡世界的《讀者文摘》（Reader’s Digest ）。
