美國加州的北方，有個地方名叫「蘋果嶺」(Apple Hill)，人口很少，生產許多蘋果。
有一年，正值蘋果採收期，我與妻子開車前來，想採購便宜的水果。
到了蘋果嶺，路邊有許多看板，標示著賣蘋果商店的方向，開始大都寫著九折，後來的是八折。我們愈往前開，蘋果的折扣，就往下掉。有五折、四折的，實在美好。
忽然，有一看板寫著：「蘋果免費」。看到免費，不禁樂上心頭，再往前開。
沒想到愈開愈遠，別的看板都沒有了，標示免費的招牌仍指向前。
路面愈開愈小，柏油路轉成碎石路。
到了碎石路的盡頭，才看到一間農舍。
農舍前擺張長桌，上面放了許多蘋果。
一對老夫婦，坐在桌邊，對著我們微笑。
「真是免費嗎？」我下車問道。
「是的。」老夫婦開心的說道。
「可以拿幾粒呢？」我有點不好意思。
「能拿多少，就拿多少。」他們指著桌上的蘋果說道。
我清洗一粒，咬了一口，不禁說道：「真新鮮，真好吃。」
老夫婦一聽，轉身回到房間，捧出一個大瓶罐，說：「這是我們作的蘋果蜜餞，也送給你們。」
我吃了一個蜜餞，直嘆：「真美妙。」。
他們又回到房內，取出自釀的蘋果汁。
我們坐下大吃大喝，並與他們聊天，又帶走一些蘋果。
離去前，我問道：「為什麼免費呢？」
老先生說道：「我們在這裡很孤單，用蘋果吸引年輕人，前來與我們聊天。」
老夫婦給我上了一門課，年紀大時，生命仍豐富，可以分享的更加多，沿途放置免費的，吸引年輕人前來。
我現在年紀也大了，不是自嘆自怨，不是自彈憂傷曲，不是咬牙切齒説：「為什麼人家都不理我？」
不，人生都是主動出擊，不要吝於可以給人免費蘋果的機會喔！
