山上的寺院裡有一頭驢，每天都在磨房裡辛苦拉磨，天長日久，驢漸漸厭倦了這種平淡的生活。
牠每天都在尋思，要是能出去見見外面的世界，不用拉磨，那該有多好啊！
不久，機會終於來了，有個僧人帶著驢下山去馱東西，牠興奮不已。
來到山下，僧人把東西放在驢背上，然後牽著牠返回寺院。
沒想到，路上行人看到驢時，都虔誠地跪在兩旁，對牠頂禮膜拜。
一開始，驢子大惑不解，不知道人們為何要對自己叩頭跪拜，慌忙躲閃。
可一路上都是如此，驢不禁飄飄然起來，原來人們如此崇拜我。
當牠再看見有人路過時，就會趾高氣揚地停在馬路中間，心安理得地接受人們的跪拜。
回到寺院裡，驢認為自己身份高貴，死活也不肯拉磨了。
僧人無奈，只好放牠下山。
驢剛下山，就遠遠看見一夥人敲鑼打鼓迎面而來，心想，一定是人們前來歡迎我，於是大搖大擺地站在馬路中間。
那是一隊迎親的隊伍，卻被一頭驢攔住了去路，人們憤怒不已，棍棒加身……。
驢倉皇逃回到寺裡，已經奄奄一息，臨死前，牠憤憤地告訴僧人：「原來人心險惡啊，第一次下山時，人們對我頂禮膜拜，可是今天他們竟對我狠下毒手。」
僧人歎息一聲：「果真是一頭蠢驢！那天，人們跪拜的，是你背上馱的佛像啊。」
人生最大的不幸，就是一輩子不認識自己。
有時，離開平臺，自己什麼都不是！
如果你擁有財富，別人崇拜的是你的財富，不是你；
如果你有權利，別人崇拜的只是你的權利，不是你；
如果你擁有的是美貌，別人崇拜的只是你暫時擁有的美貌，不是你。
當財富、權利、美貌過了保固期，你就會被拋棄……，
別人崇拜的只是自己心中的需求，不是你。
看清自己非常重要。
有時，認識自己比認識世界還難。
