柴契爾夫人曾選擇了事業和愛情，卻成為了失敗的母親。這一位曾擁有英國最高權位的鐵娘子，晚年卻承受著無限的孤獨和悲哀。
柴契爾說過：在我的世代，沒有女性會成為首相，然而她做到了。
她成為了英國第一任女首相，向人們證明了女人不但可以做到男人做的事，還可以完成一些男人都無法做到的事。
柴契爾學習很努力，但並不算有天賦，成績並不突出，但卻靠著刻苦學習考上了牛津大學。
年紀輕輕的柴契爾在25歲時，就成為了保守黨女性候選人。
就在這時，她遇到了擁有家族企業的富商鄧尼斯，鄧尼斯對年輕漂亮、又具有政治頭腦的柴契爾一見鍾情。不久，兩人步入了婚姻的殿堂。結婚兩年後，生了一對龍鳳胎。
初為人母的柴契爾並沒有對一對龍鳳胎有過多留戀，兩個多星期後，就繼續投身政治事業去了。
在愛情上，丈夫鄧尼斯一直在柴契爾的身後默默的支持著她從政，柴契爾獲得了婚姻上的幸福，在親子關係上，卻是一位失敗的母親。
她忙於政治活動，疏忽家庭教育，成了“母慈子敗”的案例。。
晚年的柴契爾曾坦言：如果時光能夠倒流，我絕不會步入政壇，因為我的家庭已經為我的從政之路付出了過高的代價。
由於柴契爾一直忙於政治活動，沒有時間陪伴子女。女兒與她的關係非常冷淡，兒子雖然跟柴契爾的關係很親密，但兒子卻一直不給她爭氣，學習成績差，還依仗母親的權勢在學校裏稱王稱霸，連老師都不敢管。
成年後，兒子參加拉力賽，在沙漠中走失。得知兒子出事的柴契爾後，出任首相以來，第一次在公眾面前落淚，懇請各國政府幫忙解救兒子。被營救後，柴契爾的兒子又因在酒店裏消費大量酒水拒不支付，並認為政府解救他理所應當，與外交官和酒店工作人員爭執不休，最後以警方介入而告終。
此後，又借著母親的地位和妻子的錢財，從事一系列冒險活動攬財。最終，因參與幾內亞政變，在南非被捕，判4年監禁緩期執行，並處以31.3萬英鎊罰金。柴契爾聞訊立刻帶著罰金去南非，才把兒子撈回來。
柴契爾教子無方，成了英國媒體公認的“母慈子敗”的案例。
柴契爾說：家就是你沒事可做時去的地方。
在與丈夫50年金婚紀念日時，柴契爾因輕度中風，失去了部分記憶。
兩年後，丈夫去世，喪夫之痛對她來說更是雪上加霜，記憶力越來越差，經常不能釋懷。
77歲生日時，柴契爾只收到了4張賀卡，她擺在桌子上，對著它們發呆。
兒子遠在西班牙居住，女兒在瑞士，孫子在美國，平時都很少回英國探望她。柴契爾的女兒說：母親不應過於期待成年子女不時的回家看望她，家人不在身邊的日子誰都經歷過，我們年幼時也總見不到母親。
3年後的大壽，也許是懷念曾經熱鬧的日子，她宴請了650人。女王伊莉莎白二世、查理斯王儲和當時的首相布雷爾都來為她祝壽。柴契爾又展露出了以前的風采，臉上洋溢著曾經的笑容，但這一切都是那樣短暫。
在之後漫長而又孤寂的歲月裏，柴契爾經常突發中風，後來連看報都變得困難了，經常看了下一句就忘了前一句。
晚年的柴契爾飽受著精神上的雙重折磨，除了病痛摧毀了她身上鐵娘子的烙印，更可悲的是，子女關係的冷淡與疏遠。
彌留之際，房間裏放滿了丈夫、兒子、女兒、孫女和孫子的照片，卻沒有一位至親陪在身邊，陪伴她的只有醫生和護士。即便去世之後，兒子和女兒也不願意第一時間趕回來，打理柴契爾的後事。
但柴契爾這令人唏噓的淒涼晚年，又怨的了誰呢？
家怎麼能夠是沒事可做時去的地方？
在本該需要關愛兒女的年代，忽略了女兒，最後得到的是女兒對她的冷漠，又把氾濫的愛給了兒子，兒子在她的溺愛之下，成了“混世魔王”“商業扒手”。
事業可以帶給你名聲、地位和成就感，但當你卸下盔甲，夜深人靜的時候，當年華老去的時候，名聲會隨著時間淡去，成就感也會消退。
也許錢會留下，但到了垂暮之年，金錢不會給我們帶來幸福感，家庭才是我們最終的後盾和歸宿。
受傷時家是遮擋風雨的傘，開心時家是洋溢幸福的河。
事業永遠無法取代家庭成為人情感的港灣。擁有幸福的家庭才是人生的目的，事業只不過是為了維護家庭幸福而採取的一種手段。可惜，柴契爾到了生命的最後階段，才明白。
