有個黑人，1963年2月17日出生於紐約布魯克林貧民區。
他有兩個哥哥，一個姐姐，一個妹妹，父親微薄的工資根本無法維持家用，他從小就在貧窮與歧視中度過，對於未來，他看不到什麼希望，沒事的時候，他便蹲在低矮的屋檐下，默默地看著遠山上的夕陽，沉默而沮喪。
13歲的那年，父親有一天突然遞給他一件舊衣服。
「這件衣服能值多少錢?」父親問他。
「大概一美元。」他回答。
「你能將它賣到兩美元嗎?」父親用探詢的目光看著他。
「傻子才會買！」他賭著氣說。
父親的目光真誠中透著渴求：「你為什麼不試一試呢？你知道的，家裡日子並不好過，要是你賣掉了，也算幫了我和你的媽媽。」
他這才點了點頭：「我可以試一試，但是不一定能賣掉。」
他很小心地把衣服洗淨，沒有熨斗，他就用刷子把衣服刷平，鋪在一塊平板上陰乾。
第二天，他帶著這件衣服來到一個人流密集的地鐵站，經過六個多小時的叫賣，他終於賣出了這件衣服。
他緊緊攥著兩美元，一路奔回了家。
以後，每天他都熱衷於從垃圾堆裡淘出舊衣服，打理好後，去鬧市裡賣。
如此過了十多天，父親突然又遞給他一件舊衣服：「你想想，這件衣服怎樣才能賣到20美元？」
「怎麼可能？這麼一件舊衣服怎麼能賣到20美元，它至多值兩美元。」
「你為什麼不試一試呢?」父親啟發他，「好好想想，總會有辦法的。」 終於，他想到了一個好辦法。
他請自己學畫畫的表哥在衣服上畫了一隻可愛的唐老鴨與一隻頑皮的米老鼠。
他選擇在一個貴族子弟學校的門口叫賣。
不一會兒，一位管家為他的小少爺買下了這件衣服，那個十來歲的孩子十分喜愛衣服上的圖案，一高興，又給了他5美元的小費。
25美元，這無疑是一筆巨款，相當於他父親一個月的工資。
回到家後，父親又遞給他一件舊衣服：「你能把它賣到200美元嗎？」父親目光深邃。
這一回，他沒有猶疑，他沉靜地接過了衣服，開始了思索。
兩個月後，機會終於來了。
當紅電影《霹靂嬌娃》的女主角拉佛西來到紐約做宣傳。
記者招待會結束後，他猛地推開身邊的保安，撲到了拉佛西身邊，舉著舊衣服請她簽名。
拉佛西先是一愣，但是馬上就笑了，沒有人會拒絕一個純真的孩子。 拉佛西流暢地簽完名。
他笑著說：「拉佛西女士，我能把這件衣服賣掉嗎?」
「當然，這是你的衣服，怎麼處理完全是你的自由！」
他「哈」的一聲歡呼起來：「拉佛西小姐親筆簽名的運動衫，售價200美元！」
經過現場競價，一名石油商人以1200美元的高價買了這件運動衫。 回到家裡，他和父親，還有一家人陷入了狂歡。
父親感動得淚水橫流，不斷地親吻著他的額頭：「我原本打算，你要是賣不掉，我就叫人買下這件衣服，沒想到你真的做到了!你真棒我的孩子，你真的很棒……」
一輪明月升上山頭，透過窗戶柔柔地灑了一地月光。
這個晚上，父親與他抵足而眠。
父親問：「孩子，從賣這三件衣服中，你有明白什麼嗎？」
「我明白了，您是在啟發我，」他感動地說，「只要開動腦筋，辦法總是會有機會的。」
父親點了點頭，又搖了搖頭：「你說得不錯，但這不是我的初衷。」
「我只是想告訴你，一件只值一美元的舊衣服，都有辦法高貴起來，何況我們這些活著的人？我們有什麼理由對生活喪失信心呢？我們只不過黑一點、窮一點，可這又有什麼關係？」
「是的，連一件舊衣服都有辦法高貴，我還有什麼理由妄自菲薄呢？」 20年後，他的名字傳遍了世界的每一個角落。
他就是——麥可•喬丹！
