美國大西洋賭城的一個週末，一位老太太玩老虎機贏了一桶25美分的硬幣。她決定停停手，休息一會，便和丈夫一起到酒店的餐廳吃晚餐。
老太太心想：「我最好先把這桶硬幣放到酒店的房間裡。」
於是，老太太對丈夫說：「你先等一下，我把這桶硬幣送回房間，然後我們去餐廳。」
說著，老太太捧著那桶硬幣走到電梯前。
老太太正要跨進電梯，卻發現裡面早已站著兩個人——兩個黑人！
其中一個身材魁梧，高大得有些嚇人。
老太太驚呆了，她的第一反應就是：「這兩個黑人要打劫我。」
但轉而又想：「不要心存偏見，這兩個黑人看起來都頗有紳士風度。」
可是老太太思想中的種族觀念根深蒂固，一種強烈的恐懼感，讓她不知道是否該走進電梯。
老太太呆呆地站在那裡，猶豫不定地望著那兩個黑人，既緊張又害怕，經過一番痛苦的掙扎，老太太終於邁腿踏進了電梯。
老太太刻意避開他們的目光，面朝外，兩眼呆呆地盯著已經關上的電梯門。
一秒鐘，二秒鐘，三秒鐘…，電梯依然原地不動。
「上帝呀！」老太太心想，他們是不是就要動手了？」
老太太心跳加速，開始冒冷汗。
就在這時，她聽到一個黑人說：「Hit the floor！」(趴到地上)。
本能告訴她：千萬不要反抗，照他們說的去做。
老太太慌慌張張地放開小桶，雙手按地趴在地板上。
那桶硬幣“嘩啦啦”地掉在地上，到處亂滾。
老太太兩手緊緊按著地板，心裡默默禱告：「把錢都拿走吧，只要不傷害我！」
空氣仿佛凝固了一樣，電梯裡一片靜寂。
幾秒鐘後，老太太聽到一個黑人非常禮貌地說：「夫人，如果你能告訴我們你住哪一層，我們很高興幫你按一下按鈕。」
那位黑人解釋說：「當我和朋友說，‘Hit the floor’時，我指的是，按一下要去的樓層按鈕，而不是讓您趴到地上，夫人！」
（英語中“Hit the floor”有兩個含義：趴到地上；按電梯的樓層按鈕。）
兩位黑人互相對了一下眼神，極力控制住自己不要笑出來。
「我的老天，我犯了一個多麼愚蠢的錯誤！」老太太心想。
她想道歉，卻不知說什麼好。
如何向兩位彬彬有禮的紳士承認，自己原本以為他們要搶劫？
三個人一起動手，將滾落一地的硬幣一一撿起，放回老太太的小桶裡。
電梯到了老太太所在的樓層後，兩個人堅持要把老太太送到房間門口，因為老太太還有些精神恍惚。
把老太太送到門口，兩個人禮貌地道晚安，轉身離去。
就在老太太走進房間的時候，她聽到兩個人在樓道裡大聲笑了起來。
第二天一早，一束鮮花送到了老太太的房間――12朵嬌豔的玫瑰，每一朵玫瑰花上都掛著一張嶄新的百元大鈔。
隨鮮花送來的還有一張卡片，上面寫著：「非常感謝您帶給我們多年未曾有過的最歡暢的大笑。」
送花人：「邁克•喬丹（籃球運動員）、愛迪•墨非（好萊塢影星）。」
