弟子修行，有一段時間，感到活得很沈悶、痛苦，甚是煩惱。
師父把弟子帶到一片空曠地帶，問：“你抬頭看看，看到了什麼?”
“天空。”弟子答。
“天空夠大吧，但我可以用一隻手掌遮住整個天空”，師父說。
弟子無法相信。
只見師父用一隻手掌蓋住了弟子的雙眼，問：“你現在看見天空了嗎?”
繼而，師父把話題一轉，說：“生活中，一些小痛苦，小煩惱，小挫折，也像這只手掌。看上去雖然很小，但如果放不下，總是放在眼前，擱在心頭，就會像這只手掌一樣，遮住你人生的整個晴空。於是，你將錯失人生的太陽，錯失藍天、白雲和那美麗的彩霞。”
弟子終於明白了自己痛苦的根源。
