幸福的密碼

1988年4月，霍華德.金森24歲，是美國哥倫比亞大學的哲學系博士。他畢業論文的課題是《人的幸福感取決於什麼？》。
為了完成這一課題，他向市民隨機派發出了一萬份問卷。
問卷中，有詳細的個人資料登記，還有五個選項：
A非常幸福。B幸福。C一般。D痛苦。E非常痛苦。
歷時兩個多月，他最終收回了5200多張有效問卷。
經過統計，僅僅只有121人認為自己非常幸福。
接下來，霍華德.金森對這121人做了詳細的調查分析。
他發現，這121人當中有50人，是這座城市的成功人士，他們的幸福感主要來源於事業的成功。
而另外的71人，有的是普通的家庭主婦，有的是賣菜的農民，有的是公司裡的小職員，還有的甚至是領取救濟金的流浪漢。
這些職業平凡生涯黯淡的人，為什麼也會擁有如此高的幸福感呢?
透過與這些人的多次接觸交流，霍華德.金森發現，這些人雖然職業多樣、性格迥然，但是有一點他們是相同的，那就是他們都對物質沒有太多的要求。他們安貧樂道，很能享受柴米油鹽的尋常生活。
這樣的調查結果讓霍華德.金森很受啟發。於是，他得出了這樣的論文總結：
這個世界上有兩種人最幸福。
一種是淡泊寧靜的平凡人，一種是功成名就的傑出者。
如果你是平凡人，你可以透過修煉內心、減少欲望來獲得幸福。
如果你是傑出者，你可以透過進取拼搏，獲得事業的成功，進而，獲得更高層次的幸福。
他的導師看了論文後，十分欣賞，批了一個大大的“優”！
畢業後，愛德華.金森留校任教。一晃，二十多年過去了。
如今，愛德華.金森也由當年的意氣青年，成長為美國一位知名終身教授。
2009年6月，一個偶然的機會，他又翻出了當年的那篇畢業論文。
他很好奇，當年那121名認為自己“非常幸福”的人現在怎麼樣呢?他們的幸福感還像當年那麼強烈嗎?
他把那121人 的聯繫方式又找了出來，花費了三個月的時間，對他們又進行了一次問卷調查。調查結果回饋回來了。
當年那71名平凡者，除了兩人去世以外，共收回69份調查表。
這些年來，這69人的生活雖然發生了許多變化 (他們有的已經躋身於成功人士的行列；有的一直過著平凡的日子；也有的人由於疾病和意外，生活十分拮据。) 但是他們的選項都沒變，仍然覺得自己“非常幸福”。
而那50名 成功者的選項卻發生了巨大的變化。
僅有9人事業一帆風順，仍然堅持當年的選擇——非常幸福。
23人選擇了“一般”。
有16人因為事業受挫，或破產或降職，選擇了“痛苦”。
另有2人 選擇了“非常痛苦”。
看著這樣的調查結果，霍華德.金森陷入了深思，一連數日，他都沉浸在自己的思緒當中。兩周後，霍華德.金森以《幸福的密碼》為題在《華盛頓郵報》上發表了一篇論文。
在論文中，他詳細敘述了這兩次問卷調查的過程與結果。
論文結尾，他總結說：
所有靠物質支撐的幸福感，都不能持久，都會隨著物質的離去而離去。
只有心靈的淡定寧靜，繼而產生的身心愉悅，才是幸福的真正源泉。
無數讀者讀了這篇論文之後，都紛紛驚呼：“霍華德.金森破譯了幸福的密碼！”這篇文章，引起了廣泛關注。
後來，在接受媒體採訪時，霍華德.金森一臉愧疚：
20多年前，我太過年輕，誤解了“幸福”的真正內涵。在此，我真誠地向大家致歉，向“幸福”致歉！
