一根小小的柱子，一截細細的鏈子，能否拴得住一頭千斤重的大象？這看似荒謬的問題，但這荒謬的場景，卻在印度和秦國隨處可見。
那些馴象人，在大象還是小象的時候，就用一條鐵鍊將它綁在水泥柱或鋼柱上，無論小象怎麼掙扎都無法掙脫。
小象漸漸地習慣了不掙扎，直到長成了大象，可以輕而易舉地掙脫鏈子時，也不掙扎。
同樣，馴虎人本來也像馴象人一樣成功，他讓小虎從小吃素，直到小虎長大。老虎不知肉味，自然不會傷人。
但有一次，馴虎人發生了致命錯誤，在他摔了一交之後，讓老虎舔淨他流在地上的血，老虎一舔不可收，終於將馴虎人吃了。
小像是被鏈子綁住，而大象則是被習慣綁住。
虎曾經被習慣綁住，而馴虎人則死於習慣（他已經習慣於他的老虎不吃人）。
習慣幾乎可以綁住一切，只是不能綁住偶然。比如那隻偶然嘗了鮮血的老虎。
