美國一個小鎮上發生了一起銀行搶劫案，搶劫犯沒能搶到錢，卻被保安困在銀行裏，他抓住一個五歲的小男孩，要求警方準備五十萬美金和一輛車，否則開槍殺人。
談判專家尼爾森趕到了，談判未果後，他只好儘量拖延時間，讓狙擊手各就各位。
眼看綁匪就要撕票，狙擊手扣動扳機，綁匪應聲倒地，小男孩頓時給濺了一身血，嚇得號啕大哭。尼爾森趕緊抱起小男孩。
此刻，外面的媒體蜂擁而至，卻聽尼爾森高呼一聲：「演習到此結束！」小男孩這才止住哭，問媽媽是不是真的。
媽媽含著淚點頭說是，一邊的員警也上來安慰小男孩，說他表現得非常好，應該獲得獎章。
第二天，鎮上的媒體集體消聲，對搶劫案隻字不提，所有的人都心照不宣地選擇保護小男孩的幼小心靈。
多年後，一個中年人找到了尼爾森，提起這件事，問他當初怎麼會喊出這樣一句話。
尼爾森笑說：「槍響的時候，我在想，這孩子可能一輩子都走不出這件事留下的心理陰影，但當我走近他的瞬間，上帝給了我一個啟示，讓我說出了『演習結束』這句話。」
這時，來人緊緊擁抱著老尼爾森，半天才開口說：「我整整被瞞了30年，前不久，媽媽才告訴我真相。謝謝，謝謝尼爾森叔叔，是你讓我擁有了一個健康的人生。」
尼爾森眨了眨眼，笑著說：「你不用謝我，如果要謝，就謝那次欺騙過你的所有人吧！」
