1964年，羅本島監獄來了一位新犯人。
就像其他犯人一樣，他一進門就被扒去衣服，換上了統一的囚服，上面寫著︰第466號。
他是一個政治犯，所以被關進了一個不足4.5平方米的單人牢房。
從此，他過著“暗無天日”的生活。
陰暗的牢房，頭頂上吊著一盞昏黃的燈，每天被囚禁23個小時，僅僅在上午和下午各有半個小時的放風時間。
他幾乎從來沒有見過羅本島監獄的太陽，也很少有機會感受到窗外的絲絲風聲，唯一能感知的只有灰頭土臉的囚犯，還有他們的呻吟聲。
羅本島監獄本是個人間地獄，那裡的獄警動輒就對囚犯們揮起皮鞭，殘忍地在綻開的皮肉上潑辣椒水，大多數人都是在獄警的皮鞭和辣椒水下度日的，幸虧他是監獄長特別安置的要犯，要不然，他也一樣逃脫不了獄警的魔爪。
已經記不清多少個日子，他幾乎每天都目睹兩個獄警拖著一個犯人，死屍一樣地從刑訊室出來，每次都看得他義憤填膺，他想改變監獄的現狀，無奈的是，身為要犯的他也是自身難保。
後來，他和眾囚犯被安排到羅本島監獄的採石場上去做苦工，每天在持槍看守獄警的監督下，拼命地搬運石頭，動作稍慢，就有被毒打的威脅。
另外，所有的囚犯只准逗留在這個採石場裡，一旦踏出採石場的邊緣，就會被無情地射殺。
由於石灰石在太陽的照射下具有極強的反光，長期在這種環境下生活的他，每天看到的只有刺眼的白色強光，以至於他的視力逐漸下降。
雖然他的視線逐漸變得模糊，但他的目光卻依然炯炯有神。
有一次，他利用放風的機會，大膽地向監獄長提出了自己的想法︰
在監獄的院子裡，開闢一片園子！
但他這一想法，被監獄當局無情地否決了。
但他並沒有灰心，幾乎一有機會就把自己的想法說出來，經過了無數次的否決，大約過了5年左右，他的願望終於實現了。
監獄當局同意了在監獄牆腳的一片狹長地帶供他開闢園子，並且破天荒地給他提供了番茄、辣椒等蔬菜的種子，羅本島監獄的院子裡從此多了一抹動人的綠色。
他每天從採石場回來，就潛心照料自己的園子，許多人都說他是監獄裡的“植物學家”，而他自己則把那片園子看作自己的心靈園地，每當採石場上的鍛石刺傷了他的眼睛，他就回到自己的園子四處看一看，那一片生命的綠色舒緩他眼睛的疲勞，消解了在採石場裡所遭受的疲憊和委屈。
但是，由於氣候的惡劣，園子的第一次收成並不是很好，僅僅收獲了一籃子不怎麼紅潤的番茄，他一個也捨不得吃，都分給了自己的獄友和獄警們。
令人驚訝的是，自從有了這片菜地之後，整個監獄有了很大的改觀，每到放風時間，許多獄友都會幫他照料一下滿園的蔬菜，在獄警們不注意的時候，他們還能揣幾個番茄回去。
更令人稱奇的是，獄警們的態度似乎也變得和藹多了，因為，他總是把新採摘的番茄發給獄友們，然後再由他們送到獄警們手中，吃了犯人的番茄，獄警們拿鞭子的手，也不再那麼蠻橫了。
一個黑人獄警說，每當我莽撞地舉起鞭子的時候，我就想起了這是一群給我番茄吃的人，在我的眼裡不再有什麼囚犯，他們讓我想起了自己的家人……
囚犯和獄警們的關係逐漸融洽起來，羅本島監獄不再是冷酷無情的“人間地獄”了。
這位第466號囚犯，在羅本島監獄整整種了18年的菜園，直至他被轉到另一家監獄。這位第466號囚犯不是別人，正是南非黑人總統曼德拉。
他用這番茄園，就讓整個監獄變得融洽起來，他不是在經營菜園，而是在耕耘人心。
