有一個故事。
多年以前，在奧斯維辛集中營裏，一個猶太人對他的兒子說：「現在我們唯一的財富就是智慧，當別人說一加一等於二的時候，你應該想到大於二。」
納粹在奧斯維辛毒死了幾十萬人，父子倆卻活了下來。
1946年，他們來到美國，在休斯敦做銅器生意。
一天，父親問兒子一磅銅價格是多少？
兒子答35美分。
父親說：「對，整個德克薩斯州都知道每磅銅的價格是35美分，但作為猶太人的兒子，應該說3.5美元。你試著把一磅銅做成門把看看。」
20年後，父親死了，兒子獨自經營銅器店，他做過銅鼓，做過瑞士鐘錶上的簧片，做過奧運會的獎牌。
他曾把一磅銅賣到3500美元，這時他已是麥考爾公司的董事長。
然而，真正使他揚名的，是紐約州的一堆垃圾。
1974年，美國政府為清理給自由女神像翻新扔下的廢料，向社會廣泛招標。但好幾個月過去了，沒人應標。
正在法國旅行的他聽說後，立即飛往紐約，看過自由女神下堆積如山的銅塊、螺絲和木料後，未提任何條件，當即就簽了字。
紐約許多運輸公司對他的這一愚蠢舉動暗自發笑。因為在紐約州，垃圾處理有嚴格規定，弄不好會受到環保組織的起訴。
就在一些人要看這個猶太人的笑話時，他開始組織工人對廢料進行分類。
他讓人把廢銅熔化，鑄成小自由女神；
把水泥塊和木頭加工成底座；
把廢鉛、廢鋁做成紐約廣場的鑰匙。
最後，他甚至把從自由女神身上掃下的灰包裝起來，出售給花店。
不到３個月的時間，他讓這堆廢料變成了350萬美元現金，每磅銅的價格整整翻了１萬倍。
生在猶太家庭裏的孩子在他們的成長過程中，負責啟蒙教育的母親們幾乎都要求他們回答一個問題：「假如有一天你的房子被燒了，你的財產就要被人搶光，那麼你將帶著什麼東西逃命？」
孩子們少不更事，天真無知，自然會想到錢這個好東西，因為沒有錢哪能有吃的、穿的、玩的？
也有孩子說要帶著鑽石或者其他珍寶出逃，有了它，還愁缺啥？
可是，這些顯然不是母親們所要的答案。
她們會進一步問：「有一種沒有形狀、沒有顏色、沒有氣味的寶貝，你知道是什麼嗎？」
要是孩子們回答不出來，母親就會說：「孩子，你要帶走的不是錢，也不是鑽石，而是智慧。因為智慧是任何人都搶不走的。你只要活著，智慧就永遠跟著你。」
在聰穎、精明的猶太人眼裏，任何東西都是有價的，都能失而復得，只有智慧才是人生無價的財富。
猶太人並不是天生比任何種族的人聰明，但他們更懂得怎樣去鑄造這枚無價的金幣。
當他們的孩子剛懂事時，母親們就會將蜂蜜滴在書本上，讓孩子去舐書上的蜂蜜，其用意是想告訴孩子：「書本是甜的。」
智慧是永恆的財富，它引導人通向成功，而且永不會貧窮。
我們不會因為有「知識」獲得財富，而是我們必須將所獲得的知識，經過思考與運用成為「智能」，才能創造出利潤。
所以，「智識經濟」最主要的內涵就是創新，它是一種智能資本，通過創新才可以製造財富。
