壹、楔子
1995年，哈佛大學教授Daniel Goleman出版一本巨著《情緒智商》(Emotional Intelligence；簡稱EQ)。這本書的最大特色，乃嚐試由大腦生理學度出發，去探索人類情緒活動的源頭。
本書並指陳，由於家庭、學校教育中，疏忽對情緒教育的重視，導致在社會壓力逐漸昇高的環境下，青少年的犯罪問題、離婚問題等皆在嚴重惡化中。情緒失控甚至成為社會亂象的源頭。
因此Goleman提出，對於情緒的掌握，不僅深深影響一個人的健康狀況、工作能力的提昇與家庭的和諧，未來，更是深深影響企業的生產力與競爭力。有感於此，本文擬針對情緒的掌握─第六項修練，作一深入探索，以饗諸君。
貳、情緒管理的模式
任何人都不免有過這類情緒失控，而事後懊悔不已的經驗：
＊今天跟女友吵嘴了，把氣帶到辦公室，刮起一陣颱風。
＊夫妻大吵一架，小孩在旁吵著要買玩具，給他修理一頓。
＊業績目標無法達成，心中煩悶，碰到塞車，破口大罵。
又翻開報紙，一幕幕社會亂象，歷歷在目：
＊飆車族被人一瞥，自認受輕視，追殺對方。
＊兩輛計程車擦撞，皆自認受害，聚眾群毆。
＊卡拉OK爭風吃醋，回家取傢伙，縱火報復。
這種情緒失控的悲劇特色，即事後當事人皆根本不明白自己當時為何會如此魯莽行事。為什麼？
為了進一步了解人類內心情緒產生的源頭，吾人借用Goleman 之研究，對人類腦部之情緒機轉的進化歷程做一說明。
基本上，人類最古老的情緒重鎮，是負責接收與分析氣味的〝嗅葉〞。其環繞在脊髓上端的腦幹之上。由於任何有機物，不論是無害的、有毒的、是性伴侶、獵人或獵物，都有特定的氣味。原始嗅葉計有兩層，第一層接收氣味並加以歸類，判別是可食的、有毒的、具性吸引力、敵人或食物。第二層則是傳遞反射性訊息，透過神經系統指揮身體採取適當行動，諸如吃、吐、親近、逃跑或追逐。
隨著人類進化，在嗅葉之上，又孕育出一個部位，稱為〝邊緣系統〞(Limbic System)，其為腦部增添了實質的情緒功能。諸如狂烈的慾望、憤怒、愛撫、驚懼。另外，在進化過程中，此部位又發展出學習與記憶兩個重要功能，大大提昇了人類的生存能力。
值得一提的是，在原始嗅腦中有一狀似杏仁的部位，共有兩個，分居腦部兩側，顧名思義，稱為〝杏仁核〞。其儲存一些與情緒有關的記憶與反應模式，一旦被啟動，則情緒容易決堤渲洩而出。
當然，身為萬物之靈的人類，腦部的進化不斷向前邁進。後來，在邊緣系統之上，又增添了幾層新的細胞，稱為〝新皮質〞。其主司思考，能對感官所搜集的訊息加以思考與規劃，並且，同時能對觀念、藝術、符號、想像產生感應。因此，新皮質使人類能對各種不同情境調整各種不同的因應方式，使人類情緒反應更精緻化。以愛為例，邊緣系統可產生肉體的快樂感覺，引發性慾。而增添新皮質之後，遂有了構築溫馨家庭的慾求。
經過上述針對幾個腦部情緒反應機制的說明，吾人可以進一步探索人類情緒的反應模式。
首先，從正常的情緒反應過程來看，當人類經由眼睛與耳朵感應到訊息時，訊息首先傳遞到丘腦，然後由丘腦再將訊息傳達到新皮質。而新皮質有一連串複雜的路徑負責訊息的接收、分析與理解，最後透過〝前額葉〞導出反應。在這過程中，如須做出情緒性反應，則由前額葉指揮，同時與杏仁核及其他情緒中樞聯手合作，如此，情緒可避免失控。
但根據紐約大學 J. LEDOUX 的研究發現，當人類經由眼睛與耳朵感應到訊息時，首先將訊息傳達到丘腦。而丘腦除將訊息透過正常程序往新皮質傳送外，另外，尚可透過一條特殊情感神經路徑，將訊息傳遞到杏仁核。因此，假如新皮質的訊息分析咀嚼較慢，則杏仁核可能率先做出情緒性反應，且這種情緒是來自最原始、最強烈的心靈深處，未經理性修飾，這種現象，我們往往稱之為情緒失控。
因此，從大腦生理學的角度，吾人可以得出一個結論，亦即，一個人的情緒(EQ)，可以影響一個人的行為。因此，一個人，如何在理性與感性之間，拿捏到平衡點，即是本文以下探討之重心。
參、何謂EQ
EQ ( Emotional Intelligence，稱為情緒智商 )，從廣義來看，其意謂個人自我掌握以及人與人之間圓融互動的能力或人格特質，其涵蓋範圍，譬如如何激勵自己愈挫愈勇 (自我驅策力)；如何克制衝動與遲延滿足 (自制力)；如何調適情緒，避免因過度沮喪影響工作能力 (熱忱)；如何設身處地為人著想 (同理心)等。
1983年心理學家霍華‧嘉納 (H. Gardner)《心理架構》一書中，明白駁斥人生的成就，不單只是取決於IQ，而是多種智能的結晶。他將其歸類為七大項：語言、數學邏輯 (此兩項即傳統所謂IQ)、空間能力、體能、音樂才華、人際技巧與透視心靈能力 (後二項即嘉納所謂的個人智能)。
後來，沙洛維為EQ下基本定義時，萃取嘉納的個人智能觀點，並將之擴充為五大類：
(一) 認識自身情緒的能力：認識自身情緒是EQ的基礎，其對了解
自己、掌握自己非常重要。
(二) 妥善管理自己情緒的能力：包括如何自我安慰、擺脫焦慮或
不安等。
(三) 自我激勵能力：包括對目標的專注、自制力─克制衝動與遲延
滿足、保持高度熱忱等。
(四) 認知他人的情緒能力：欲認知他人的情緒，是屬於讀心術的技術範疇，在此，同理心是最基本的技巧、其建立在自我認知的基礎上，且將心比比。
(五)人際關係的管理能力：亦即管理他人情緒的藝術，在此蘊涵了
傾聽、溝通、說服等技術。
肆、EQ對人生成就的影響
一般人總以為高IQ即等於高成就；且IQ是先天上無法改變的事實。因此，每個人的命運被天註定了。但是，這種宿命論卻無法解釋許多經驗上的事實。
曾有人追蹤1940年代哈佛大學95個畢業生在中年後的成就，以薪水、生產力、本業位階三個標準來看，在校成績最高的不見得成就較高；IQ高對生活、人際關係、家庭、愛情的滿意程度亦不是最高的。因此，IQ已無法解釋人生成就的能力。而相對地，這問題的關鍵，卻可以在EQ找到完整答案。
為了凸顯EQ與人生成就的關係，以下吾人嚐試由五個剖面來深入分析：
(一)EQ對一個人健康的影響
在此，吾人以逆思考方式，由負面情緒來詮釋對健康的影響：
1、致命的憤怒─將增加患病機率
每一次發怒，都會使心跳速率和血壓提高，增加心臟負荷。
可能造成血管微裂，形成血小板累積，致罹患冠狀動脈疾病。
2、過度焦慮─將增加患病機率
布魯斯‧麥艾溫在其《內科醫學檔案》中討論壓力引起疾病：
◆損害免疫功能，加速癌細胞轉移，且增加感染病毒機會。
◆加速血小板累積，導致動脈硬化或心肌梗塞。
◆引發氣喘、糖尿病。
◆導致腸胃潰瘍。
◆對海馬回造成傷害，記憶力減退。
3、沮喪：將使病情惡化且影響復原速度。
因此，長期的情緒不佳(EQ低落)，顯然，將戕害一個人的健康。
(二)EQ對一個人家庭生活的影響
我們很少聽說，一個成功男人的背後，有一個破碎家庭……
伊莉絲‧席格爾在其著名小說《愛的故事》中曾說：「愛就是永遠不要說抱歉。」
但環顧現代婚姻問題離婚率節節高陞事實，卻又不免讓人質疑，人類情感生活中最珍貴的「愛」，是否要到墳墓中去挖掘。唯美的真愛是令人憧憬的，但兩性之間永遠無法畫成一個正圓，彼此等量地愛著對方。因此，真愛意謂的是無悔的犧牲與無盡的包容，在柏拉圖的世界裡。而大和解時代的愛情，永續經營的必要條件是彼此的長久的尊重。在紅毯一端跌倒的男女，所犯的最大錯誤，通常是以為可以藉愛情的力量來改變對方。因此，兩性的情感生活，需要的是尊重、包容與犧牲，有所捨、有所得，這就是EQ的智慧。
(三)EQ對一個人工作能力的影響
人類腦部的邊緣系統，主司學習與記憶功能，大大提昇人類的生存競爭能力。在此，記憶功能，乃意謂將每次學習經驗儲存在腦部，而當爾後遭遇類似情境，喚醒記憶，以茲應變的能力。
另外，若將記憶的能力更精緻化來區分，人類的記憶能力可分類為三大類：
- 海馬回：主司客觀事實的記憶。
- 杏仁核：對具有情緒意涵的記憶格外深刻。
- 前額葉：主司操作記憶(Working Memory)，指為解決問題而記住相關訊息的專注能力。
舉例來說，當我們看到遠方來人，海馬回幫你認出是屢次借錢不還的遠房親戚；杏仁核則提醒你他是個非常討人厭的傢伙；而前額葉馬上幫你思索，如何找個理由向他要債。
因此，一個人若是情緒穩重，前額葉的操作記憶強，則可從容應付手邊的所有工作。但是，假如一個人非常情緒化，則憤怒、焦慮等強烈情緒將會干擾前額葉維持操作記憶的能力，我們會覺得無法專心思考，影響我們的工作能力。可見，提昇EQ，亦即掌握自我情緒，有助提高工作績效。
(四)EQ對一個人管理能力的影響
一個人若只會管理事務，那麼，他是個卓越的技術人員。相對地，一個卓越的管理人員，他就必須懂得拿捏人際關係，維繫團隊成員間和諧運作。
未來，卓越的管理者，除了必須具備優秀技術能力外，尚必須具備以下的人格特質(EQ)：
1.自制力強：能掌握自己情緒，將工作做均衡安排。
2.創造力強：向問題挑戰並主動向別人或環境學習。
3.協調性強：能判別優先順序並適當組織人力因應。
4.說服力佳：具有凝聚向心的領袖魅力。
5.具幽默感：談笑之間，化解歧見，促進團隊合作。
(五)EQ與團隊IQ
管理大師彼得‧杜拉克(P. Drucker)最早提出知識工人的概念，並指出未來的勞動力，將由這些知識工人逐漸頂替。
而杜拉克所言的知識工人，究竟具有何種特色？基本上，他認為這類工人的技術非常地專門。另外，這些未來員工的生產力，與組織中各成員的協調性息息相關。因此，杜拉克特別強調，知識工作的特點是「工作單位是團隊，而非個人的總合」。這也是未來的企業，為何促進人際和諧的EQ能力，將成為企業重要的生產資源的原因。
未來，團隊IQ的高低，並非單純取決於各成員才華與技術能力的平均智力。因為團隊內部運作不協調，將使個人才華與技術能力大打折扣，致團隊績效表現低落。
吾人可以一簡單公式詮釋如下：
團隊IQ≠ 個人IQ ／N
＝(個人EQ * 個人IQ)
在此式子中，個人EQ成為個人IQ的權數(乘數)，亦即，假如團隊中所有人EQ的總合大於1，顯示該團隊運作和諧，讓每個人才華潛力發揮到極致；反之，則該團隊將只是一群烏合之眾，不堪一擊。
如此，提昇組織成員EQ能力，成為組織提昇生產力的關刻因素。
伍、提昇EQ的方法
從以上的探索，吾人可以歸納出兩點心得：
第一、從自我的角度來看，EQ意謂一個人內在的人格屬性，其包含對事物的判斷能力、鑑賞能力、思維方式、行為意向與態度的綜合體。而且，每個人有其特殊的個性，因此俗云：「人心不同，各如其面」。因為一個人個性的塑造，除受先天遺傳(老祖宗的求生本能)影響，尚受後天學習環境(父母、師長、朋友等)的薰陶。因此，每個人的個性都是可以重新塑造的。
第二，從人我的角度來看，EQ意謂人際關係圓融的互動能力。其包含同理心、傾聽、解決糾紛等人際互動技巧。而這些人際互動的技巧亦是可以學習強化的。
因此，吾人可以肯定的說，一個人只要有心改變自己，透過學習，他就有機會變成他想要的自己。
以下，吾人從生活經驗中，擷取四個原則，提供作為修練EQ參考：
1.自省：如同蘇格拉底的名言「認識你自己」。人貴自知，知道自己天賦的優點，進一步強化之；知道自己天生的缺憾，努力改善之。
2.自律：不斷叮嚀自己遠離撒旦的誘惑，堅持原則。包括不斷提醒自己抑制衝動的個性；亦不斷訓練自己有延遲滿足的耐心。
3.自動：點燃心中一股熱忱，不斷驅策自我向目標挺進，向所有的抑鬱、沮喪說不。
4.同理心：人只要能設身處地、將心比心去了解他人感受，必可得到他人的共鳴與接納，人際關係必然圓融。
陸、跋尾
哲學家沙特 (J. Sartre)宣稱：人的存在，比任何事務都更重要。
而存在主義的精髓，就是要創造自己。
人生，哀，莫大於心死。
人，只要有心改變，就有機會脫胎換骨。
EQ的形成，由情緒影響心情，釀成性情，再雕塑成性格，是潛移默化的。 當然，個性的修練與改造，亦必須持久的努力……
讓杏仁核與前額葉手牽手、心連心，不要成為情緒的俘虜。
