一個以「辣醬」為主要產品、規模很小的食品公司，資金規模只有十幾萬；但老總卻很有信心，在工廠的牆上寫著「要做這座城市辣醬第一品牌」的豪言壯語，時刻激勵著員工的信心。
辣醬上市之前，老總尋思著給辣醬做宣傳廣告，他本來想在這座城市某個熱鬧的街頭租一個超大的、顯眼的看板，標上他們的產品，讓所有從這經過的人一下子都能注意它，並從此認識他們的辣醬。
但是當他和廣告公司接觸後，才發現市中心廣告位置的價格遠遠高於他的想像，他那小小的企業承擔不起這天價的廣告費。
可是他並沒有失望，而是不停地到處打探，試圖能發掘出哪裡有便宜而且實惠的廣告位置。
經過反覆尋找，他終於看好一個重要路口的看板。那個十字路口車輛川流不息，但有一點遺憾的就是，路人行色匆匆，眼睛只顧盯著紅綠燈和疾駛的車輛；在這很難保證有很好的效果。
但打探了一下價格，還算可以接受，老總很滿意，於是就租了下來。對於老總這個舉措，員工們紛紛提出質疑，但老總只是笑而不答，彷彿一切成竹在胸。
舊廣告很快撤下來，員工們以為第二天就能看到他們的辣醬廣告了！然而，第二天，員工們看到看板上根本就沒有他們的辣醬廣告，上面赫然寫著：「好位置，當然只等貴客，此廣告版招租，全年88萬。」
天哪！這樣的價格該是這座城市最貴的廣告位置了吧。
天價招牌的衝擊力似乎毋庸置疑，每個從這經過的人似乎都不自覺地停住腳步看上一眼；口耳相傳，漸漸地，很多人都知道了這個十字路口上有個貴得離譜的廣告位置虛席以待，甚至連報紙地方版面都給予了關注的報導。
一個月後，「爽口牌」辣醬的廣告登了上去；辣醬廠的員工終於明白了老總的心計，無不絕口稱讚。辣醬的市場迅速打開，因為那「全年88萬」的廣告價格早已家喻戶曉。
「爽口牌」辣醬成為這座城市的知名品牌。老總把原先的口號擦去，換成了要做全國第一品牌的口號，一位員工問他：「我們還不是這個城市的第一品牌，為什麼要換呢？」
老總意味深長地回答說：「價值只有在流通中才能得以體現，但價值的尺規卻永遠在別人手中；別人永遠不會賦予你理想的價值，你必須自己主動的去做一塊『招牌』，適當地放大自己的價值！」
