有一位公差，押解著一名犯人去京城，犯人是一名犯了戒規的和尚。
路途很遠，負責任的公差每天早晨醒來後，都要清點身邊的幾樣東西：
第一樣是包袱，他跟和尚的盤纏、寒衣都在裏面，當然不能丟；
第二樣是公文，只有將這份公文交到京師才算完成任務；
第三樣是押解的和尚；
第四樣是自己。
公差每天早晨都要清點一遍，包袱還在，公文還在，和尚還在，我自己也還在，這才開始上路出發。
日復一日，偏僻的小路上經常只有他們兩個人在行走，很是寂寞，免不了閒聊幾句，久而久之，彼此互相照應，關係越來越像朋友了。
有一天，風雨交加，饑寒交迫，兩人趕了一天的路，投宿到一個破廟裏。
和尚對公差說，不遠處有個集市，我去給你打點兒酒，今天好好放鬆一下。公差心思鬆懈，就給和尚打開了枷鎖，放他去了。
和尚打酒回來，還買了不少下酒菜，公差喝得酩酊大醉，酣酣沉沉地睡過去。
和尚一看，機會終於來了，他從懷裏掏出一把剛剛買來的剃刀，嗖嗖嗖，就將公差的頭剃光了。
然後，他將公差的衣服扒下來，自己換上，又將自己的僧袍裹在公差身上，連夜逃走了。
對發生的這一切，公差都渾然不覺，一覺睡到第二天日上三竿。
醒來後，舒舒服服地伸個懶腰，準備清點東西，繼續趕路，一摸手邊的包袱，包袱還在；再看公文，公文也在；找和尚，和尚找不著了。
廟裏找，廟外找，到處都找不到。
公差就抓撓著頭皮想：和尚哪兒去了呢？
呃？發現頭居然是光的！
低頭再一看，身上穿著僧袍，恍然大悟，原來和尚也在呢！
前面三樣都在，第四樣就該找自己了。
公差又在廟裏四處找，怎麼也找不著自己，心裏就納悶兒了，和尚還在，我到哪兒去了？
這個故事放在今天來解讀，顯得格外有意味。
包袱是什麼？是我們每個人的物質生活。不管現在的生活水準如何，每個人都希望生活得更好，所以，物質生活的改善會伴隨我們的一生，它不會丟。
公文是什麼？公文是我們的職業。一個人在世界上安身立命，總要有一個社會角色，要通過一種職業建立與他人的關係，實現自己的價值。這份公文也丟不了，會隨時帶在身邊。
和尚是什麼？和尚是我們日復一日做的事。當我們的自我還在時，押解和管理著這個囚徒。
但是，當我們日復一日地忙碌著，過分專注於一件一件瑣碎的事情——自己的事、家人的事、工作的事、朋友的事，就會越忙越忽略自我的感受，不知不覺將自己置換成囚徒。
表面上看，和尚還在，日復一日忙碌的事都沒有丟，自我卻找不到了。
我們忙的到底是什麼呢？為什麼我們會置換成自己的囚徒？
有些人特別看重權力，他的精力都用在打通關係、經營人脈上，職位越來越高，官越做越大，到最後就變成了權力的囚徒。
有些人特別想掙錢，開始的時候掙錢是為了花，掙到最後它就是個數字，那就變成了金錢的囚徒。
有些人一輩子執著於感情，一次又一次地受傷，但癡迷不悟，最後就變成了感情的囚徒。
往往是你過度看重身外物，日復一且，你就讓自己變成權力、金錢、感情的囚徒，這時候，“你”就丟了“自己”。
