奇異果是源自中國的一種水果，只是在紐西蘭發揚光大，奇異果的中國名字叫「彌猴桃」，百餘年前，紐西蘭人前來中國旅遊，無意間吃了「彌猴桃」後，覺得果汁酸中帶甜，美味的不得了，因此遂將「彌猴桃」種子帶回紐西蘭栽種，並成功地將種子培養成「奇異果」樹，成為紐西蘭引以為傲的外銷產品。而奇異果具有很多食療的功用，好處如下：
■奇異果具高營養價值
奇異果是一種營養價值非常高的水果，含有豐富的維他命 C，它的維他命 C含量是柳橙的 2倍，此外，奇異果還含β胡蘿蔔素、維他命 E、葉綠素、精氨酸、哂、多醣類、多酚類等營養成分，可維護健康體質、痛風。
奇異果中所含的纖維有三分之一是果膠，而果膠則被認為具有降低血中膽固醇濃度，進而有預防心臟病的功能；大量纖維也有促進排便功能，可防便秘。
■奇異果可提高免疫力
尤對提升手術後、病後、體弱及孕婦的免疫效果最具明顯；奇異果同時也具抑制致癌物質的功效，可保護 DNA防止突變，多吃奇異果具防癌抗癌效果。
■奇異果具低熱量
奇異果的每單位營養素之熱量次於檸檬、草莓、哈密瓜及木瓜而排名第五，同時它也具有高鉀低鈉的比例和木瓜、杏及香蕉一樣。
不論是金色或綠色奇異果，它們的營養素全都一樣，一顆奇異果含豐富維他命Ｃ，所含的維他命Ｅ更可提供一日所需的三分之一，而且還是低脂低熱量，另外還有豐富的葉酸、鈣質、膳食纖維、以及低鈉高鉀。
■奇異果可改善睡眠品質
吃奇異果可改善睡眠品質。現代人常因工作、玩樂越來越晚睡，甚至日夜顛倒，如何改善睡眠品質便成為現代人必修課題。
紐西蘭奇異果協會根據一份研究報告表示，夏季每天吃兩顆紐西蘭奇異果，將可補充身體中的鈣質，增強人體對食物的吸收力，以及逐漸改善品質不好的睡眠狀況。
該報告比較廿七種美國最受歡迎的水果中發現，奇異果中鈣含量高於葡萄柚、蘋果和香蕉，而鈣正是可以提升睡眠品質的重要元素，可以增進神經系統的穩定並放鬆，奇異果的微酸能適當促進腸蠕動，增強食物的吸收力，減少腸胃脹氣的發生，如此便能逐漸改善睡眠狀態。
■奇異果可提高性功能
根據美國食品研究調查，奇異果中所含的精氨酸能幫助傷口癒合，並有治療陽萎的作用。此外，同時發現，奇異果所含的精氨酸、生育酚及多醣等成分還具提高性功能的功效。
■很多人會將奇異果剖成兩半，像吃冰淇淋般的以湯匙掏食，最後再把被掏空後的果皮丟棄。台北縣中祥醫院院長蔡忠良醫師說，其實奇異果最精華的部位就是果皮，因此吃奇異果應連皮一併吃。
