老街上有一鐵匠鋪，舖裡住著一位老鐵匠，由於愈來愈沒有人再打製鐵器，所以他改賣鐵鍋、斧頭和拴小狗的鍊子。
他的經營方式非常傳統，人坐在門內，貨物擺在門外，不吆喝，不還價，晚上不收攤，你無論什麼時候從這兒經過，都會看到他在竹椅上躺著，手裡拿著根煙斗，身旁是一個紫砂壺。
他的生意也沒有好壞之說，每天的收入正夠他喝茶和吃飯，他老了，已不再需要多餘的東西，因此他非常滿足。
有一天，一個文物商人從老街上經過，偶然看到老鐵匠的那把紫砂壺，因為那把壺古樸雅緻，紫黑如墨，有清代壺名家戴振公的風格，他走過去，順手端起那把壺，壺嘴內有一記印章，果然是戴振公的。
商人驚喜不已，因為戴振公在世界上有捏泥成金的美名，據說他的作品現在僅存3件，一件在美國紐約州立博物館裡；一件在台灣故宮博物院；還有一件在泰國某位華僑手裡，是1993年在倫敦拍賣市場上，以16萬美元的拍賣價買下的。
商人端著那把壺，想以10萬美元的價格買下它。當他說出這個數字時，老鐵匠先是一驚，後又拒絕了，因為這把壺是他爺爺留下的，他們祖孫三代打鐵時都喝這把壺裡的水，他們的汗也都來自這把壺。
壺雖沒賣，但商人走後，老鐵匠有生以來第—次失眠了。
因這把紫砂壺他用了近60年，一直以為是把普普通通的壺，現在竟有人要以10萬美元的價錢買下它，他回不過神來。
過去他躺在椅子上喝水，都是閉著眼睛把壺放在小桌子上，現在他總要坐起來再看一眼，這讓他非常不舒服。
特別讓他不能容忍的是，當人們知道他有一把價值連城的茶壺後，總是擠破門，有的問還有沒有其他寶貝，有的甚至開始向他借錢，更有甚者，晚上推他的門。
他的生活被徹底打亂了，他不知該怎樣處置這把壺。
當那位商人帶著10萬美元現金，第二次登門的時候，老鐵匠再也坐不住了，他招來左右店舖的人和前後鄰居，拿起一把斧頭，當眾把那紫砂壺砸了個粉碎。
現在，這位老鐵匠還在賣鐵鍋、斧頭和拴小狗的鍊子，據說他今年已經102歲了。
因為，老鐵匠失去紫砂壺的財富時，卻同時找回他的平常心。
