有位大學同學的婆婆是美國人，現住在美國的養老院。
朋友每星期和她先生到養老院看婆婆，她婆婆已獨居30多年，88歲時還可以獨自開車旅行。
最令我驚訝的是，當我到美國同他們到養老院探視婆婆時，她說婆婆前一星期才換裝6顆假牙，共花了20多萬台幣。
如果印象沒錯，在台灣的老人或家屬大概不會想到要幫一位96歲的老太太換更合嘴的假牙，如果假牙不合用，往往老人本身也會覺得算了，家屬也泰半同意 但都96歲了，何必費事、花這個錢？
可是朋友的老公是美國人，想法不一樣。
他希望母親有較好的牙齒享受食物的美味，沒有想過這口假牙用多久的問題，只想著就是要給老媽媽好的生活品質。
「年長了—-善待自己」
這件事讓我想起，有一次採訪一位知名的專欄作家，那年她70歲決定植牙，她不太有錢仍決定花這100萬元。
有朋友知道後都問，都70歲了為何仍大費周章的植牙？
面對朋友的質疑，她的想法很簡單，「只要活著，就要有好的生活品質。」
她說， 如果知道植牙後只有2年可活，她照樣會植牙，因為可以過2年好品質的生活也值得。
是的，人總是勞累一輩子，希望到老時可以享受清閒的生活，但真正到老時，卻又認為已經老了，也就什麼都算了，仍選擇侷促、將就將就地活著，一輩子都沒對自己好過。
人生有限，想做什麼就去做，就是一種生命品質的體現。
我們的長者一向被「老」字拘束得緊，覺得老了就應妥協，不應奢求，不應多所要求。
享受生活 別等到下輩子
一位朋友的媽媽之前因為不好意思說要換假牙，一直帶著一副不合嘴的假牙，只有委屈自己誰也不知。
有一天在公園運動時，聽同樣為假牙而苦的老朋友說換了假牙後吃東西那種快活的感覺，心想「目光不清，牙齒不健，活到老，難道就這麼等著回蘇州賣鴨蛋？」
因而覺悟不再委屈自己，84歲的她以半年的時間，接受迷你植牙手術，從此不再三餐只喝流質食物，重拾吃花生的滋味，這讓她覺得非常開心，不但如此，這位老太太現在更愛笑了。
的確，有品質的生活從體貼自己的需要開始。
有不少長者花自己的錢做想做或喜歡的事，還要在意別人的眼光或評價，這樣，生命的品質一直出不了頭。
記得以前鄰居的阿公? 每次巧遇他們準備出門去玩的模樣，問他們要上哪去玩，他們卻總是說，「嘸啦，只是要去刈香啦！」
到廟裡刈香是鄉鎮旅遊活動中最好的替代字眼，也是真的去廟裡進香了，但他們總不好意思直言自己是去玩的，好像去玩是不道德或是踰越本分的事。
其實，尊重自己的意願或適度的表達，就是一種品質，喜歡就好，想玩就去玩吧！
喜歡就值得去做，別忘了，這輩子就只這一次，遇到好康的或是幸福的事，可別總是期待留給下輩子。有沒有下輩子，只有天知道，是吧？
