2004年，李連杰在馬爾代夫度假時遇海嘯地震，“大難不死”的他刷新了對生命的看法。回國後立馬著手成立國內第一家民間公募基金會“壹基金”，用來幫助全世界需要幫助的人。
他開始奔赴在各個救災的最前線，慈善義演“有求必應”，為慈善事業“死心塌地”地付出。
2008，“亞洲英雄”李連杰登上《時代》封面，被譽為締造了從武術家變成慈善家的“杰世紀”，他說：“我花了超過20年的時間，才體會最厲害的武器是微笑，最強大的力量是愛，我要凝聚這種力量，傳遞給更多有需要的人。”
