從前有一位國王和一個波斯奴隸同坐一船。
那奴隸從來沒有見過海洋，也沒有嘗過坐船的苦，他一路哭哭啼啼，戰慄不已，大家百般安慰他，他仍繼續哭鬧。
國王被他擾得不能安靜，大家始終想不出辦法來。
船上有一位哲學家說道：「您若許我一試，我可以使他安靜下來。」
國王說道：「這真是功德無量。」
哲學家立刻叫人把那奴隸拋到海裡去，他沉浮了幾次，大家才抓住他的頭髮把他拖到船邊，他連忙用雙手緊緊地抱著船舵，人們才把他拖到船上。
他上船以後，坐在一個角落裡，不再作聲。
對哲學家的這個主意，國王很讚許，便開口問道：
「你這辦法，奧妙何在？」
哲學家說：「原先他不知道滅頂的痛苦，便想不到穩坐船上的可貴。大凡一個人總要經歷過憂患才會知道安樂的價值。」
